In today’s fast-paced business world, it can feel like there’s never enough time to tackle everything on your to-do list. And regardless if you are working with a virtual assistant (or not) to help you tackle your to-do list, I’d like to introduce you to a powerful productivity tool that has made a huge difference in my business: The Power Hour.

I belong to a fantastic virtual assistant community, The VA Connection, and as a group, many of us come together twice a month on Zoom for Power Hour sessions. At the start of the call, we check in with each other and share what we are going to be working on for the next hour. Everyone then mutes and turns off their cameras and gets to work. Once the 60 minutes is up, we all come back together on camera to share and celebrate our successes.

For many years, I was spending a lot of time working “in” my business (i.e., client work) but not working “on” my business. In January, I committed to these bi-monthly sessions, and am primarily using this time to accomplish administrative tasks for my business. In fact, you are consistently receiving this newsletter every four weeks as a result of the two power hour sessions on my calendar each month. 

What Is a Power Hour?

A power hour is simply a focused, uninterrupted 60-minute block of time, where you focus on a specific task or project without distractions.

Intimidated by a big project? Break it down into smaller, manageable pieces. Use a Power Hour session to focus on one piece at a time, and you’ll quickly see progress as each step leads you closer to completion.


Tips for Making Your Power Hour Sessions a Success

Have a Plan
Know exactly what you want to accomplish. Write down a list of specific tasks for the project you want to focus on.

Block Time in Your Calendar
Find a time that works best for you, whether it’s an early morning session to kickstart your day or a late afternoon session. The important thing is that you schedule it in your calendar just like any other appointment. Personally, I like late afternoon sessions because it allows me to tackle that day’s client work first, so I can really focus on what I’m trying to accomplish for my business.

Eliminate Distractions
Turn off phone and email notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and let colleagues know you’re unavailable, if necessary.

Celebrate Achievements
When you finish a power hour session, take a moment to celebrate your progress. This will help keep you motivated to continue using power hour sessions.
